Why Slowing Down Is the Fastest Way to Improve

There's a tendency in drum education to treat simple grooves as a stepping stone — something you move through on the way to more complex patterns. I've come to think that's the wrong way to look at it.

The simplest grooves are the ones that demand the most musicality. When there's nowhere to hide behind complexity, everything is exposed — your feel, your timing, your dynamics, your intention.

I've watched intermediate drummers struggle with basic rock beats because they've never really sat inside them. They learned them quickly and moved on. They can play the pattern, but they can't make it groove.

With my students, I now spend more time on fewer grooves. The goal isn't to tick off a checklist. It's to play something simple and have it feel good — really good — every single time.

That's a much harder skill than learning a complex pattern. And it's one that stays with you.
